Alexander Lonquich, born in Trier, is one of the most important performing artists of his generation as a soloist, chamber musician and as a conductor. He plays regularly in the most important European music centers, is a guest at international festivals (Salzburg Festival, Mozart Week Salzburg, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Kissinger Sommer, Lucerne Festival, Chamber Music Festival Lockenhaus, Edinburgh Festival, Beethoven Festival in Bonn and Warsaw) and performs on stages worldwide.
As a pianist and conductor, he has impressed with orchestras such as the hr Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Stuttgarter Kammerorchester, Kammerorchester Basel, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
As a soloist, Lonquich has performed with the Vienna Philharmonic, Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Orchestra Filarmonica del Teatro alla Scala in Milan, WDR Sinfonieorchester Cologne and Czech Philharmonic Orchestra under conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Yuri Bashmet, Philippe Herreweghe, Ton Koopman, Mark Minkowski, Kurt Sanderling and Sándor Végh.
An avid chamber musician, he has partnered with Nicolas Altstaedt, Vilde Frang, Heinz Holliger, Sabine Meyer, Christian Tetzlaff, Carolin Widmann, Jörg Widmann, Tabea Zimmermann, the Auryn Quaertet, Artemis Quartet and many others.
In 2002 Alexander Lonquich founded a piano duo with his wife Cristina Barbuti, which has performed in Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Norway and the USA.
Alexander Lonquich’s solo recordings for EMI (Mozart, Schumann and Schubert) have been highly acclaimed by the press and have received important awards such as the »Diapason d’Or« and the »Edison Prize«.
Various CDs have been released by ECM Records: works by the Israeli composer Gideon Lewensohn; French piano music (Fauré, Ravel, Messiaen), which received the highest acclaim from the international press; a solo CD with works by Schumann (Kreisleriana) and Heinz Holliger (Partita) and a duo CD with the violinist Carolin Widmann with works by Schubert. A double CD with Schubert’s last piano works was released by Alpha in 2018.
Artist in Residence Alexander Lonquich was with the NDR Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg in the 2015/16 season, and with the Prague Spring in 2017.
Recent highlights include tours in Europe as soloist/conductor with the Camerata Salzburg, the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, as well as an evening of Beethoven’s five piano concertos with the Munich Chamber Orchestra.
In 2013 Alexander Lonquich and his wife Cristina created their own small theater space in Florence, the »Kantoratelier«, where topics of psychology, music and theatre are explored in depth through workshops, seminars and concerts.
