Liam Byrne divides his time between making very old and very new music on the viola da gamba. He cut his teeth playing with many leading European early music ensembles in his youth, including the Huelgas Ensembe, Dunedin Consort, Academy of Ancient Music, and Fretwork to name a very few. Nowadays Liam works with a broad range of composers, folk musicians and electronic musicians making new work with his 17th-century instrument, such as Nico Muhly, Donnacha Dennehy, David Lang, Efterklang, Martin Hayes, Christian Wolff, Valgeir Sigurðsson, Errollyn Wallen, and many others. He has two duo projects that are particularly close to his heart: with lutenist Jonas Nordberg and with fiddler/composer Cleek Schrey, and since moving to Berlin in 2017 he is a frequent collaborator of Elina Albach and Ensemble Continuum. Liam has created original sound installations for the Victoria & Albert museum and Dulwich Picture Gallery in London. He is a member of the Icelandic artist collective Bedroom Community, with whom he released his debut solo album »Concrete« in 2019.
