Hans-Joachim Hinrichsen graduated in German studies, history and musicology at the Free University of Berlin and has been a full professor of musicology at the University of Zurich since 1999. He has been emeritus since 2018. He is co-editor of the periodicals »Archiv für Musikwissenschaft« and »wagnerspectrum«, as well as a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the advisory board of the Beethoven-Haus Bonn. His most recent books, which have also been translated into Japanese and Korean, are devoted to the works of Franz Schubert, the symphonies of Bruckner, the songs of Mahler and the piano sonatas of Beethoven. His new Beethoven monograph (»Beethoven. Musik für eine neue Zeit«), which will also be published in an American translation in 2025, is already in its second edition.
