»Luxurious poetry of sound«. This is what the leading Spanish culture magazine Scherzo wrote in 2021 after a concert by the Mandelring Quartet in Madrid.
Founded in 1983, the ensemble has won major competitions, including the ARD International Music Competition and the Premio Paolo Borciani. Since then, concert tours have taken them to numerous international music centres. The concert calendar regularly includes tours to various European countries, North and South America and Asia. The quartet is a welcome guest at major festivals, including the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg and Hohenems, Niederrhein Musikfestival, Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele, Festival Internacional De Música De Marvão and Kuhmo Chamber Music.
The Hambach Music Festival, founded by the Mandelring Quartet in 1997 in its home town of Neustadt an der Weinstraße, has become a meeting place for chamber music lovers from all over the world. The ensemble has also been organising its own concert series at the Berlin Philharmonie since 2010.
The Mandelring Quartet has performed cycles of the complete string chamber music of Mendelssohn, Brahms and Shostakovich on several occasions. In spring 2023, it has been invited for the fourth time to play concerts on the precious Stradivari instruments in the royal collection in Madrid.
Numerous award-winning CD recordings demonstrate the exceptional quality and broad repertoire of the quartet. The recording of the complete Shostakovich quartets and the recording of Mendelssohn’s complete chamber music for strings have attracted particular international attention and are regarded as reference recordings by renowned critics. Most recently, the CD »Pennies from Heaven« was released with selected encores as well as a double release with French repertoire: the quartets by Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy combined with works by their contemporaries Fernand de La Tombelle and Jean Rivier.
