»Enthusiasm, musical passion and curiosity about everything unusual are my motivation«, said Karin Freist-Wissing in an interview about a staged performance of Bach's St Matthew Passion in 2019. This sentence can be taken as a motto for her Kreuzkirchenmusik, which she has been directing and constantly developing since 1990. The three ensembles – Kantorei, Sinfonieorchester and Vox Bona Kammerchor – play a leading role in Bonn and the entire Rhineland with their approximately 230 active musicians. Numerous prizes at national and international competitions, concert tours in Germany and abroad, as well as invitations to renowned festivals testify to the professional artistic level of the Kreuzkirchenmusik.
Karin Freist-Wissing taught choral conducting at the music academies in Detmold and Cologne and directed the choral academy at the Diademus Festival for Early Music in Roggenburg in August 2022. In addition to performing works of church music of all genres and epochs, she focuses on the planning, development and implementation of interdisciplinary projects in collaboration with artists from other fields and institutions. Under her direction, the Kreuzkirche Bonn has become a cultural centre where Christian faith meets philosophical, humanistic and atheistic world views, and where music is used as a medium for in-depth discussions of current social issues.
