Peer Steinbrück, SPD, was Federal Minister of Finance (2005–2009) and Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia (2002–2005). As the SPD candidate, he ran for the office of Federal Chancellor in 2013, but lost the election. After resigning his seat in the Bundestag in September 2016, Peer Steinbrück took over as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Bundeskanzler-Helmut-Schmidt-Stiftung. An economics graduate, Steinbrück was office manager to the Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia, Johannes Rau, from 1986 to 1990. In 1990, he became State Secretary for the Environment, then for Economics and Transport and finally Minister for Economics and Transport in Schleswig-Holstein in 1993. From 1998 he was Minister of Economics and Transport and from 2000 Minister of Finance in North Rhine-Westphalia.
