Perform the »Ode to Joy« in sign language – at the Opening Party Clear the Stage for Beethoven on 7 September!
Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in sign language
Beethoven’s music is joy – for people with hearing impairments or deaf people as well as for all of us. Beethoven himself was deaf at the time of the premiere of his Ninth Symphony and could not hear his music. We are following in his footsteps – with an inclusive performance of the fourth movement of the Ninth Symphony to kick off the Opening Party Clear the Stage for Beethoven. Anyone of any age is cordially invited to take part on the Münsterplatz stage: as part of a sign language choir!
We invite non-hearing and hearing people to rehearse the choral music in the fourth movement of the Ninth Symphony in sign language together with the Euskirchen »Klingende Hände« (»sounding hands«) sign language choir. At the performance on 7 September, all sign language performers will be on stage at Münsterplatz together with the National Youth Orchestra, the World Youth Choir and conductor Jörn Hinnerk Andresen.
The project and rehearsals will be led by Japanese singer and conductor Erika Colon from the sign language choir White Hands Chorus Nippon. Before the performance, she will also teach the audience a few gestures of the »Ode to Joy« – so that they can join in.
