Typically Shostakovich: Lots of irony and sarcasm which conceal a bitter reality – music somewhere between courage and despair.

Description
In the third concert of their journey through Shostakovich’s string quartets in Bonn and Cologne, the Jerusalem Quartet combines three very different works. Raw and elemental energies break out in the folk melodies of the Second Quartet. The Seventh Quartet begins somewhat more mischievously. In contrast, the Ninth is brimming with self-confidence – perhaps a self-portrait of the composer?
