Kane Kampmann has been designing light installations for church interiors for years. The project for Beethovenfest Bonn particularly appealed to her: here, she was able to unfold her visual language to accompany Haydn’s pictorial oratorio about the course of the year with live music. The theme of nature has long been at the centre of her work. For the projections for the »Seasons«, she was also inspired by the historical models and the music.
»I researched drawings by the illustrators of Thompson’s original poem and found original sheet music by Haydn in second-hand bookshops. Then I also made my own drawings. The shots for the backgrounds are film clips from microscopic images.«
The result: an exciting dialogue between the optimistic nature painting in Haydn’s music, the lyrical text about country life, weather and harvest and the dynamics of Kane Kampmann’s moving images. The genre scenes of peasant work and virtue from the 18th century were juxtaposed with colourful images of microscopic life. Abstract forms and lines, explosions of light, musical notes and scraps of text seemed to be moved by the music and changed the listening experience.
