Founded in 2017 as part of the Deutsche Welle and Beethovenfest Bonn Campus Project, the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine has now become a musical home for the 12 to 22-year-old musicians. The young people had to flee their geographical homeland, but they want their musical home to endure. Beethovenfest Bonn therefore gives the orchestra the opportunity to perform as a peaceful ambassador of Ukrainian culture in the UN city and to ensure its continued existence.
In addition to Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto, which will be performed by the young Ukrainian pianist Dmytro Choni, two works by Ukrainian composers will be performed: 80-year-old Yevhen Stankovych is considered by many to be the most important Ukrainian composer of his generation. He created his second symphony, the »Heroic«, in 1975, which centers on a dramatic requiem, with great emotional gestures. It is considered a beacon against the war and a memorial to the fallen. Denys Bocharov is one of the young Ukrainian composers. Born in 1989, he has since fled Kharkiv and is currently completing his new work, which will be premiered at this concert, in the Kiev region.
