»Because of their unique technique, the band is a feast for nerds, [...] but fortunately the music doesn't sound nerdy at all.« (FAZ 2021)
Grandbrothers' music creates a communion between the old and the new. Pianist Erol Sarp and engineer and software designer Lukas Vogl have developed a unique sound with a prepared piano that combines elements of neoclassical and minimal music as well as pop and electronica in a captivating, danceable and sentimental way - the duo defies strict classification into one genre. »The band can claim to be unique or even to have advanced the sound of the grand piano« (FAZ 2021).
Erol Sarp and Lukas Vogl met at the Institute for Music and Media at the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf, and their collaboration began in 2012. Since then, they have been tinkering with the technology and software of the apparatus, which, built onto a grand piano, generates all the sounds and tones of the band live. Sometimes it sounds like a harpsichord, sometimes like a synthesiser or a drum machine. The rich sound spectrum barely hints at its analogue origins from just one grand piano. Especially in the live experience, the fascinating effect of synthesis and processing of sounds unfolds. Their latest album "Late Reflections" (2023) was also originally conceived for a live concert - which they played in the special acoustics of Cologne Cathedral.
Erol Sarp, born in Wuppertal, currently lives and works in Berlin. Lukas Vogl, who grew up in Zurich, lives in Bochum, where the duo's recording studio is also located. Since 2015, Grandbrothers have released four albums, with which they have toured throughout Europe and the USA. They contributed the song »Bloodflow« to the soundtrack of the movie »Alles außer gewöhnlich« (by the makers of »The Intouchables«).
