The biggest appreciation so far of Marialy Pacheco’s qualities has been the winning of the Montreux Jazzfestival Solo Piano Competition 2012. She is the first woman to win this prize in 15 years history of the competition.
Born in Havana 1983, Marialy Pacheco was raised in a musical family and began piano studies from an early age. At 15 she attended the Escuela Nacional de Artes, followed by three years of composition studies under Tulio Peramo at the Instituto Superior de Artes in Havana.
In 2002 she won the Cuban competition Jo-Jazz, with Grammy award-winner Chucho Valdés presiding over the jury. Two years later she recorded her first album »Bendiciones«, with several Jazz albums following. The pianist moved to Germany, toured through Europe – both solo and with her trio – and built international reputation.
In August 2014, she gave her debut as classical pianist and showed her musical variety, when she performed Bach’s Piano Concert in G minor with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in Brisbane/Australia. Marialy Pacheco has performed at national and international festivals like Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival, Enter Music Festival (Poland), Rheingau-Musik-Festival, Jazzfestival Oloron (France), Piano City Milano, and Havana Jazzfestival.
In June 2016, she presented the project »Danzón Cubano« together with WDR Funkhaus Orchestra, streamed Live on ARTE TV concerts. In the following years, she toured with the project at Beethovenfest in Bonn and in other German venues.
In April 2017, Marialy released her album »DUETS« – an intimate and many-faceted album featuring Hamilton de Holanda, Omar Sosa, Joo Kraus, Rhani Krija, Miguel Zenon and Max Mutzke. During summer and fall 2018, Marialy played in various line ups presenting »DUETS« at the »Woman in Jazz« Festival, at Teatro La Fenice in Venice, and at the Luxembourg Philharmonic.
In August and September 2019, Marialy debuted for the first time in the US with concerts in Seattle, Boston, Philadelphia, the legendary Birdland Jazz Club in New York, as well as the renowned Detroit Jazz Festival.
The year 2022 followed with 2 major album releases: »Manos«, a live Duo album with Cuban pianist Omar Sosa released in April and »Reload«, a Trio album celebrating the music and culture of cuba and Latin America featuring Avishai Cohen, Nils Wülker, Karl Perazzo, and Rhani Krija, released in October.
In 2023 she debuted at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg with Max Mutzke, followed by performances in Lithuania, Bucharest and a duo concert with Leszek Mozdzer at the Duisburg Philharmonic Theater.
