Susanne Tod first completed a degree in social pedagogy with a focus on theatre pedagogy, before studying sign languages, modern German literature and German language at the University of Hamburg after several years of professional experience. She works as an access dramaturge, theatre educator and director in projects with a focus on inclusion/diversity. She specialises in productions performed in German Sign Language (DGS) or bilingually in spoken and sign language. Another focus of her work is audio description.
As a theatre educator, she works closely with schools for hearing and communication (Elbschule Hamburg, Münsterlandschule Münster) and various cultural institutions (including Altonaer Museum, Junges Schauspielhaus, HausDrei). From 2017–2022, she was project manager for the cultural education projects »Blickwinkel« and »Geschichten stärken« at the District & Cultural Centre Motte.
From 2012–2022 she initiated and managed the youth club TheaterPlus with Eyk Kauly at the Ernst Deutsch Theater (Hamburg). In 2018 she directed »Und wir flogen tausend Jahre« (»And we flew a thousand years«), for which she received the Hamburg Children’s Theatre Award in 2019. She regularly works as an access dramaturge at Kampnagel in Hamburg, including for »Die Wellen« and »Die Insel« ([in]operabilities, February and November 2024).
She was also dramaturge for »Blödes Bild!« at the Junges Theater Augsburg (October 2024) and director for »Ich will das so!« at the Junges Theater Münster (April 2024, invited to the Westwind Festival 2025).
She has worked on productions at the Sophiensaele Berlin, the Staatstheater Hannover and the Societätstheater Dresden. She regularly collaborates with Deaf artists such as Eyk Kauly, Athena Lange, Jan Kress and people like them. Since 2023 she has been part of the artist collective [in]operabilites.
