"In alto mare, in alta montagna." This Italian idiom uses the same adjective to describe the sea and the mountains, referring to their distance and remoteness and the risks of their exploration.
In the musical world, secluded and distant can mean long-forgotten works – or forgotten instruments. The Belgian baroque ensemble InAlto is dedicated to performing little-known vocal and instrumental music of the baroque period. A special focus is on rediscovering the repertoire for the zinc, which was one of the most important musical instruments of the 16th and 17th centuries. Thus, the great masters such as Monteverdi, Schütz and Praetorius also wrote for zinc. It was considered the instrument that could best imitate the human voice. The ensemble, founded by Lambert Colson, draws on this potential of period instruments to bring the music of a bygone era into the present in a historically informed way.
Since its debut in 2012, InAlto has performed at prestigious venues and festivals internationally, including the Venetian Centre for Baroque Music, the Muziekgebouw Amsterdam and the Musikfest Bremen.
